I ♥ Valentines Day

I ♥ Valentines Day

And all holidays if you haven’t caught on yet 🙂 Valentines day is so much fun though, because you get to make hearts and enjoy pink and red.. It’s like being a little girl again! Especially when you have two little girls to share it with!

We had a pretty low-key holiday, mostly focused around the little ladies since my hubby was working the closing shift. The girls and I woke up before Daddy to prepare a big breakfast.

Nothing like breakfast cooked by little ladies!

Aren’t they too cute ♥

Pancakes…everyone’s favorite (but mine), bacon, sausage, and hash browns, made up our Valentines Day breakfast feast!

Meat and potatoes!

What says I love you more than heart shaped pancakes??

I even tried to gather my collection of stoneware and pottery together for the occasion. I have a lovely assortment of purchased items and gifted that I feel don’t get enough attention.

Some soggy strawberries frozen from last years harvest and powered sugar paired with heart-shaped pancakes make it feel like we are eating a decadent treat ♥

Whole wheat pancakes with strawberries and powered sugar.

Since my hubby had to work, the rest of the day was mostly uneventful. The girls and I finished off the night with a Sawtelle family staple, spruced up ramen! No sense in cooking an elaborate meal for just us (especially when the girls totally prefer ramen :P).

Sawtelle family favorite.

And, I just had to have some sort of dessert! I just had to! I made us a single layer vanilla cake, made with whole wheat flour. The girls REALLY liked it! I thought it was impressive for a wheat cake but I think I prefer my dessert to be untainted by healthy goodness..haha…

Single layer cake.

The girls helped me frost it with cream cheese frosting, (my youngest telling me how much she loved this cake the entire time) and then we enjoyed it!

ummm ~yum

That was our Valentines Day. Simple and sweet.

I really enjoy sharing this holiday with my children because I think it’s important to teach them the value of love. Not just romantic love, but the love you feel for anyone in your life. It is a day to stop and celebrate how much love one heart can hold for family and friends, near and far.

How did you spend your Valentines Day? With a special someone? or several special someones? I hope that it was truly amazing either way!

Have a fantastic day!

Saturday Morning Pancakes

Dad’s Old Fashioned Whole Wheat Pancakes

It has become quite the tradition in our home to have Daddy make pancakes on Saturday morning. We found a recipe a while back and adapted it to meet our taste and health standards. What we came up with is a delicious and nutrition pancake recipe that has become a staple in our home.

This healthy whole wheat pancake recipe takes no time at all to prepare…exactly why my husband has no qualms with making it on Saturday morning. You could even keep the dry ingredients mixed in a jar and at ready!

So from my family to yours!

Happy Father’s Day

Pancakes and Presents for Daddy

I love to celebrate Father’s Day! It’s one of the many perks of becoming a parent, hey you must have something right? But really, I love showing my husband some real appreciation for what he does and means to us. I also love to teach the girls what it means to honor and love someone…I can’t think of a better time of year!

This year the girls and I woke up before Dad to finish up some last-minute touches on presents and prepare pancakes. Working with my two girls is as always very rewarding and incredibly frustrating at the same time. They really enjoy being included in the festivities but I have a certain need for perfection…so, you all probably know how that goes.

It was totally worth it in the end though, to have them wake up their Daddy, present his gifts to him, and offer him up some homemade pancakes from our own family Recipe (look for the recipe later this week). Now, Daddy is usually the pancake provider of this home but on Father’s Day I guess it seems like a nice thing for me to do, to let him sleep in while the little ladies and I do all the work.

A while back the girls had made Plaster of Paris Hand Prints in our art class. I was already planning on having them paint them up and present to their Daddy for a gift to hang in his new office so holding off until Father’s Day seemed logical.

I set them up to paint them in a nice manly charcoal grey and grey glitter before we made our pancake batter. We finished them off with some twine to hang them from. The Girls “wrote” their names on the tags while I wrapped them up. They turned out so cute!

Plaster of Paris Hand Prints

I spent the last several days sewing a tie to give to my husband as a gift. I found the pattern and tutorial on The Purl Bee.  It was a simple but time-consuming project (most of the sewing is by hand!). I’m really happy with the results and I’m sure it’s going to look so handsome on my sweetie 😉 That’s if he will actually ever wear it! Look for the how to on Welcome To The Hollow (should be posted in the next couple of days).

I hope that we made the Daddy of our house feel as special and appreciated as he should!

We love you so much!

Happy Father’s Day!
